The expressionist paintings of Bangkok nightlife by Chris Coles are weird puzzlers.
Most are rendered in an almost childish or folkish hand, with figures adopting cartoony or blank expressions.
Thick lines and garish, watery colors make the paintings look simpler than they are.
After some pondering, I've come down on the side of liking 'em, and apparently I'm not alone.
Coles has an upcoming three-week show at the trendy Agora Gallery in New York's Chelsea District.
